Bible:

The focus this week was on Jesus’ miracles of removing demons and healing a paralytic. We are learning that Jesus has power over sickness, nature, Satan, and sins.

Literacy

Reading:

Students continued to practice reading strategies to help difficult words (stretch and re-read, flip the sound) as well as improve comprehension by checking for understanding as they read. Additionally, students practiced deepening their understanding of a text by asking questions during a read aloud.

Writing:

We learned about combining sentences that have connected ideas. For example: I like cats. I like dogs. Can be combined to, I like cats and dogs. We continue to focus on punctuation and capitalization.

Math:

Last week we wrapped up our unit on skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s from standard and non- standard starts.

The students have also been practicing estimation. They are working on explaining their thinking to justify their estimate.

Valentine’s Day!

Showing Love

2H has been learning about showing love to others, even those that we do not like to be around. Jesus taught in his Sermon on the Mount that we should love our enemies. Because Christ loved us so much to take our punishment on him, we should show love to others. Today we made a paper “Chain of Love” to decorate our classroom. Each student chose four people they are going to show love to this week by drawing and writing their names on the chain. Ask your child who they chose and what they plan to do. Try and hold them accountable. I look forward to hearing about it next week. – Miss Hesmert

We continue to learn about Jesus’ early ministry in Bible. The focus this week was on the start of Jesus’ miracles of healing a servant and calming a storm. We are learning that Jesus has power over sickness and nature.

Literacy

Reading:

Last week we continued to practice reading strategies to help difficult words (stretch and re-read, flip the sound) as well as deepen understanding of a text (make connections with a text, ask questions while reading). Students practiced skills in a whole class format as well as in small groups led by a teacher.

 Writing:

We are still focusing on punctuation and capitalization. This week we practiced this while writing a story. The students’ stories are so creative and fun to read.

We finished off the week by reviewing skip counting by 2, 5, 10 forward and backward from non-standard starting points.

Students were also introduced to a new unit on Estimation. An estimate is a good guess based on a strategy. We have learned the strategies:

Sampling- pouring some out and counting, then taking a guess based on the number counted.

layers/rows- counting the objects in one row and then counting up the rows to make an estimate.

chunking/grouping- counting a small amount of the objects and the roughly grouping the objects and skip-counting to make a guess.

Science:

Last week, students learned about water sources. Water sources are bodies of water where water is stored. On Friday, students were introduced to the water cycle. The water cycle is driven by the sun and includes evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

Literacy:

Reading:

Last week, students continued to practice Checking for Understanding and Cross-Checking while they read. This week, we will review how to read non-fiction text so that we can collect and share information. Students will review and transfer information they collected for their Canadian region and will write an imaginative letter, describing their region as if they are there.

Please encourage your child to practice these (and other reading strategies) while they do 10-15 minutes of daily Home Reading.

Writing:

We are continuing to focus on the 5Ws (who, what, where, when and why) in our writing tasks. This week we started a “Roll-a-Story” where the students were tasked with writing a story that contained a person/animal, object and a place. This week the stories included a boy and a girl or a bat, scissors or a chair, and a city or a mountain. The stories were so creative.

Math: Last week, we finished our unit on representing numbers in different ways. This week, we will begin a new math unit on skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, starting from multiples of 2, 5 and 10 as starting points.

Good-Bye from Ms. Ho!

Dear 2H,
Thank you for entrusting me to be a part of your child’s life. As we say good-bye for now, I part with gratitude for the blessing it has been to be your child’s teacher. Though the time has been short, I’ve had the joy of witnessing God watering his love and nurture over your little ones and seeing sprouts of growth since the first days of September. I treasure the stories your children have shared from their heart during our writing sessions, as well as the fun we had on our field trip to Arocha and skating! Though I will miss each one of your children very much, I also look forward for the new plans God has in store for me in grade 8. See you again, whenever the next time may be!
Blessings for the rest of the school year!
Dora Ho

Our Learning Journey

Bible Memory: A messenger is calling out, “In the desert prepare the way for the Lord. Make a straight road through it for our God.” Isaiah 40: 3 (NIRV) Due Jan 17

Bible:

In Bible we have begun learning about Jesus’ early ministry. So far we have learned about the importance of John the Baptist and his job of preparing the way for Jesus. We have discussed how our Bible verse this week is connected to John. This week we also learned about Jesus’ baptism and the Holy Trinity and have talked about how we are urged to follow his example.

Literacy:

Word Work:  Word Work Show What You Know (SWYK) will be on Tuesday.  A new list will be administered on Wednesday.

Reading:

This past week, we have been reviewing comprehension and accuracy reading strategies we learned in term one. One example of a comprehension strategy is, Check for Understanding. This strategy teaches students to frequently stop and monitor whether they understand what they are reading. This is typically a quick summer of what they’ve read, starting with, “who” and “what”. One example of an accuracy strategy is, Cross Checking. This strategy teaches students to ensure that words make sense and match the letters on the page.

Please encourage your child to practice these (and other reading strategies) while they do 10-15 minutes of daily Home Reading.

Writing:

We are continuing to focus on the 5Ws (who, what, where, when and why) in our writing tasks. The students worked on orally telling a partner about their Christmas holiday. Then they were expected to write about their holiday with the focus of the 5Ws and adding details to support their main idea.

Math: Over the last few weeks, students have been learning to order numbers (1st , 2nd , 3rd) and represent numbers in a variety of ways. A few ways to represent numbers include tally marks, base ten blocks, coins, ten and five frames, and number expressions.

Social Studies: Students have been learning how to use non-fiction texts to learn about Canadian regions over the last few weeks. Some examples of regions include mountain, forest, prairie and tundra. This past week, they were introduced to mapping skills and will use their skills to map familiar places.
