Looking Ahead

Star of the Week– John

Bible- We will be learning about Jesus’ temptation and the calling of his disciples. 

Bible Verse- “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor. Hate your enemy.’ But here is what I tell you. Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you. Then you will be children of your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:43-45a (NIRV).   They will recite on Thursday, January 31st

Writing – We will focus on the writing trait of word choice this week.

Reading- This week, we will continue to practice the reading strategy of visualization to help deepen our understanding of a text.

Math- This week, students will continue to practice skip counting by 2, 5 and 10 beginning at different starting points.

Science- All of our salmon eggs have hatched into alevin!  We will begin observing the behaviours of our alevin.  In addition, we will be starting our unit on the Water Cycle.

Art- This week, we will be reading about who the Metis People are.  In addition we will be learning about the importance of the Metis Sash to the Metis People.  We will design our own Sash.

Upcoming Dates:

February 1- pro-D day.  No School.

Feb 4-Feb 8- Dance Week.

Feb 27- Student Led Conferences

 

 

Parent Volunteers

Dear Wonderful Parents,

We are looking for 3 parent volunteers who would be able to assemble (folding, stapling and sticking labels) student portfolios in preparation for student-led conferences at the end of February. The work can be either done at school, or the materials can be taken home to be assembled, and completed by February 11.

Week of January 14th

Looking Ahead

Skating field trip- 

The Grade 2 classes will be going skating on Monday, January 14th. We are leaving the school at 10:15am and we will arrive at Minoru Ice Rink at 10:30am. We’d love to see you! Parents who are coming can help students put on and take off ice skates.  If you are interested, you may skate as well but you will have to bring your own skates or rent from the rink.

Please help your child prepare the following:

  1. Warm clothes, jacket, and mittens
  2. Thick, long socks AND an extra pair of socks
  3. Snack – If you come skating with us, please do not purchase snacks for your child at the skating rink. We will have snack at school before we leave and we will be having lunch as soon as we return to RCS. Thank you for your cooperation.

Literacy- This week we will continue to practice making connections while we read.  This strategy helps to deepen our understanding while we read.  Additionally, students will be introduced to strategies that will help to develop their reading accuracy.

Writing – We will continue to focus on the writing trait of ideas this week.

Bible- We will introduce the identity of God the trinity (Father, son and Holy Spirit)

Bible Verse- Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4   They will recite on Friday, January 18th.

Social Studies- Students will continue to work on their regions of Canada mini report.  This report is meant to expose students to non-fiction materials and have them practice working with features of non-fiction texts such as headings, photos, captions and maps.

Science- We will begin our first Science unit on the Water Cycle.

Term 2 Clubs- Term 2 Clubs will start on Monday (January 14th) and end on March 1st. The is a club list posted in our room. There have been no changes in club assignments. Please remember to pick up your child promptly on their club day.

Musical Performance– Mallet and Membrane will perform at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, January 16th in the large gym.

 

Week of January 7th

Dear 2HB families,

Thank you so VERY much for your incredibly generous Christmas gifts.  We felt so very loved and appreciated.

We hope you had a fantastic and restful Christmas break and feel ready to get back into routine.

Looking ahead:

Devotions– Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on prayer during devotion times.

Zones of Regulation– We will be reviewing what each zone means and what it looks and feels like. We will be intentional about checking-in and assessing our feelings and utilizing various tools and strategies to help us move into the optimal zone for learning.

Star of the Week -Star of the week will begin NEXT week.

Spelling, Bible Memory and Home Reading will resume as normal.

Reading– Review how to make deep connections while we read and introduce how to visualize as we read.

Writing -This week we will focus on the writing trait of ideas.

Bible -We will begin to learn about Jesus’ early ministry from the book of Matthew.

Math -Our focus will be on using skip counting to count a large number of items.

Social Studies/Science– Students will work on a teacher guided report on ONE of Canada’s regions.

 

Important Dates:

January 11- Pajama Day and Family Groups! Your child is invited to wear his/her pjs to school. They are welcome to bring a favourite book from home, labelled with their first and last name, or use the classroom books to read with a buddy in their Family Group. There will be no chapel in the gym this Friday.

January 11- Skating Field trip form due

January 14- Skating field trip to Minoru Ice Rink

January 16 @ 1:30-2:30- Musical performance by Mallet and Membrane at RCS

 

 

 

Week of December 10

Jaycee is student of the Week.

Bible/Chapel Prep- we will continue preparing for our chapel. Please read email sent out on Sunday.  Also, please note that we will be practicing in the large gym from 8:30-9:15 each day.  In addition, we will schedule some more practice times.  See schedule below.

Language Arts:

Spelling- resumes this week.

Writing- 12 Days of Christmas, Christmas card message for buddies

Reading/Presenting- Narrators will practice reading with expression, clarity and proper pace. Actors will practice memorizing their parts and performing their actions with appropriate and expressive gestures.

Math- The students will be introduced to number lines.

Social Studies- study of Canadian regions continues.

 Important Dates:

-no PE. Our class will be practicing for chapel

Dec 12

-PE, Music and French as usual

Dec 13

-no PE, music or French. Our class will be practicing for chapel.

Dec 14

– 2HB Chapel.  Please arrive between 8:00-8:15.  Enter through the outside door.  Parents, if you are able, we would love your assistance with putting on costumes between 8:00-8:30.  Thank you in advance!

-Last Day of classes. School closes at 2:45pm

-The library will be closed after school on Friday, December 14th. Students are welcome to keep their books over the break. If you are planning to travel, please keep library books.

Reminder: Skating Field Trip tomorrow!

Sorry for this late reminder, but tomorrow your child will have a skating field trip. Please remember to dress your child appropriately for skating. If you have your own skates and an appropriate ice skating helmet (bike helmets are not allowed), you can bring them.

Finally, parents are asked NOT to attend. This will be an opportunity for the Grade 7 Buddies to develop their responsibility by assisting their little buddy. Thank you for your understanding!

Bible/Chapel:

This week, we will continue to practice and rehearse for our upcoming Chapel on Friday, December 14th.  More information will be sent to your email shortly.

Bible Memory- Due December 14th.

Language Arts:

  • Spelling- there is NO spelling this week
  • Writing- 2HB will work together to create their own 12 Days of Christmas story.
  • Literacy/Non- Fiction Writing/Social Studies- Students will begin a short study of one of Canada’s regions.  They will practice some of the reading strategies they have learned so far to locate specific information pertaining to their region of study.  Students will practice writing facts that contain relevant information.

Math:

This week we will continue to practice showing and representing numbers in different ways.  Students will also be introduced to ordinal numbers which are numbers that tell the position of something in a sequence (first, second, third etc.)

Looking Ahead

Bible/Chapel Prep:

We will begin our unit on the Christmas story this week.  We will focus in on the incredible actions of each of the characters in the story but ultimately, we will uncover God’s ultimate incredible action of sending His son Jesus into our world.

Bible Memory test is this Friday, November 30.

Language Arts:

Spelling: We will continue our spelling unit on number words.  Spelling tests is on Friday, November 30th.

Literacy: Over the next few weeks, we will introduce our first lessons in Reading Power.  Students will discover that making connections to what they read will help deepen their understanding of a text.

Writing: Students will have lots of opportunities to practice journal writing we read about and reflect on the Christmas story.

Math:

Students will be introduced to our new math unit on showing and seeing numbers.  Students will explore different ways they can show and describe numbers between 1-100 using objects, drawings and symbols

Upcoming Dates:

November 29- Musical practice field trip to middle campus to practice for our upcoming Christmas concert.  Field trip consent form has been sent through MSM.

November 30- Family Groups cookie decorating and RED and GREEN Day! Please send 1/4 cup of peanut free candies along with your child to use for cookie decorating.

December 3- Christmas Musical matinee at 1:30 pm and Report Cards published.

December 4- Christmas Concert at the Chan Centre.  Please purchase your tickets as soon as possible!

Language Arts

Literacy- Students will continue to present their oral stories to their peers.

Spelling- In preparation to an upcoming math unit on representing numbers in different ways, the students will be learning how to spell number words this week.  You child will bring home a list of number words to memorize. The red group will need to know how to spell words from 0-10, green group 0-20, blue group 0-100 and yellow group 0-100. Since it is a short week, the students will have 2 weeks to learn their words. The spelling test will be on November 30th. 

Bible Memory Verse

But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. Jeremiah 10:12

The verse will be recited on November 30th, 2018.

Math

Our math math unit on equal/not equal will wrap up this week.  We will continue to practice comparing two unequal sets and using a variety of strategies to make them equal.  We will also be practicing word problems.

Social Studies

This week we will continue to look at map symbols and how they are used in maps.  Students will practice reading maps of our school and will create a map of the classroom.

Looking Back

What a wonderful ice skating field trip we had!  Thank you so much to our incredible parents for helping us to get on and off the ice, for skating with us and for cheering us on!  If you have any photos that you would like to share, please email them to Mrs. Bjornson or Mrs. Ho and we can post a few!

Star of the Week: Hayes is Star of the Week this week.

Library: Due to the Holiday Monday, library has been switched to Wednesday.

Literacy: The green storyboards that were sent home last week are due on Tuesday, November 13.  If you are unsure about what your child is supposed to do, please view an email that was sent by Mrs. Ho that explains the activity.

Spelling: There is NO spelling this week.

Bible: We will continue to review some of the early Kings of Israel: Solomon, Jeroboam, Rehoboam, and Ahab. We will focus on their sins, response, and God’s mercy with each king.

Bible Memory Test: This weeks bible memory test is November 16

Math: We will continue to explore the concept of Equal and Not Equal. Students will be practicing how to make two sets equal by using addition or subtraction.  We will also be exploring word problems.

Socials: This week we will wrap up our unit on Rights and Responsibilities.  We will also continue with our mapping unit with a focus on the compass rose and symbols.
