Oral Storytelling Unit – Pink Sheet

Posted by bchan | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on October 10, 2019

Dear Parents,

In the coming weeks the Grade 2 students will be doing a unit on Oral Storytelling. We will begin by talking about what our names mean. We will use this information to practice our oral storytelling skills. The students have been asked to find out what their names mean. Please help your child by discussing and answering these questions on the PINK sheet that will come home on today.

Who named you?

What does your name mean?

Why did you get this name?

Is there a special story about your name?

How many names do you have? What are they?

Do you have a name in a different language? What it is?

What is your family’s cultural background?

Do you have any nicknames? How did you get them?

This would be a great time to tell your child the story behind their names (i.e. family name, biblical references, cultural origins, etc.) and how you picked their names for them.

Your child will be presenting their findings after Monday, October 21.
Please help your child complete the information sheet they brought home and return it to school by Monday, October 21st, 2019.

Here is the story behind my name: Betty

I was named by my grandmother.  When I was born, she thought it would be great to name me after the Queen of England.  But as a baby, I was really small  and the name Elizabeth was too long and too big for a small baby.  So my parents decided to choose a pet version of the name Elizabeth.  They had a choice  between Patty, Betsy and Betty.  I am so glad they chose Betty because Patty reminds me of hamburger patties and the name Betsy is sometimes used for cows!

Elizabeth is a hebrew name and it means: God is satisfaction or God is abundant.

Thank you for your help with your child’s learning.

Thank you!

Reading:  Your child has been taught how to pick “just right” books in class. We use the iPICK strategy where each letter stands for…

i – me!

Purpose – Why do I want to read it?

Interest – Does it interest in me?

Comprehension – Do I understand?

Know: Do I know most of the words?

If you have any questions about what a “just right” text would be for your child, you can speak to me or visit the school library and ask Ms. Huber!  She would be able to direct you to books that are interesting and appropriate for your child.

Bible Memory: The BMV will come home at the back of your child’s agenda on Monday, September 23.

Call for Recess Supervisors

0

Posted by bchan | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on September 6, 2019

There are so many great reasons to sign up and be paid to be at RCS. This year we have switched when we need Parent Volunteers to ONLY be at Morning Recess.

Why is that so great? It is great because Parent Supervisors have less students at one time to supervise because we have two 15-minute morning recesses. The first recess from 10:30-10:45 and has the Kindergarten to Grade 3. The second recess has only the Grade 4’s and 5’s. Our deep hope is students and supervisors will have greater success during these distinct playtimes. What a great way to be connected, help the school and get some Starbuck’s money on the side.

We are looking for at least 15 parents who speak English and can commit from September to June for at least one time per week during the 10:15-11:15 time period. Currently we have our busy and over committed teachers covering the morning recess supervision in addition to their before, after school and lunch supervisions.

Please email at rteodora@myrcs.ca or call the Elementary Office to sign up and become involved as a Parent Recess supervisor.

Welcome 2CH Parents! 2019-2020
