Day 4:

  • started our day with a delicious breakfast (beans, rice, fried plantains, oatmeal, toast, cereal, etc.)
  • this was our first “Work day”
  • we worked all morning (3 1/2 hours) helping create the foundation for a guesthouse that will house people working in the new orphanage when it is finished
  • a Guatemala work crew was removing dirt to flatten the area and create the foundation
  • our work consisted of loading wheelbarrows full of dirt and taking it to another location to dispose of it
  • it was grueling work, and the students were tired, but in excellent spirits. Even though most had never done any manual labour, some even said it was kind of fun
  • After a delicious lunch, including a dessert of frozen bananas dipped in chocolate, we headed out to our last day of children’s ministry
  • the VBS went very well. It was bittersweet, as it was our last day with those children, of whom we had become quite fond
  • at the end, we were able to give each of the students and the teachers a small gift (a toothbrush, toothpaste and a friendship bracelet, handmade by our RCS students)
  • after the VBS, on the bus ride home, we were surprise by an unexpected soccer game. Our hosts had arrange for us to play soccer at a private stadium with the teachers from the school at puruhla. It was a hit! All of our students has so much fun, and couldn’t believe how talented each guatemalan player was
  • We came back to the guesthouse and had dinner with the guatemalan teachers
  • then we shared a time of devotions with them and were able to share with each other the impact we felt each others work had on the children of Guatemala
  • After some of our students washed the days dishes, it was free time, and then bed
  • they all felt exhausted after a hard days work and a soccer game, but fulfilled
  • all slept well that night

Day 5 plan:

  • It is Thursday morning, right now – Day 5
  • they have told me that the pla for today is to visit the “sinkhole” – a cave where pagan worship often takes place
  • they often take teams there to sing worship songs and redeem the area for the Lord
  • After lunch we will do another home visit and visit some high school English classes
  • We are all looking forward to the day
