Make something for Mom:

With Mother’s Day around the corner, we’ve got several great opportunities to make a gift for your mom! Come paint a single bud vase (May 8 &9), make a card (May 11th) or learn some recipes, gift wrap ideas and more for how to celebrate your mom at our Mother’s Day 101 with “Mumsy”(May 12th) ! 

Share a photo of what you’ve made for your mom for a chance to win a Starbucks gift card after Mother’s Day weekend!

Candle Making- SPring Session

We’re running our spring candle making session May 16-18th.  As we had so much interested in the fall, our list is already full from this, but we’ll open up spots if anyone on the list can’t make it. Arise and Shine Candles will be helping us again with this. *Note: this is a two part session. You’ll NEED to be there Tuesday and either Wed/Thurs to make a candle.

3D Puzzle Design Challenge

We’re looking for creative 3D puzzle designs! 
Come May 24th for more info and to get started on Tinkercad.
All submissions due May 31st. 

The winning design will be printed (a copy for you) and some to send to children ICC supports in Chengsha. This is an excellent opportunity to bless someone in need!

To celebrate poetry month, each week we’ll have a new poetry prompt set out in the Learning Commons. Come write a poem in response to that prompt! Share your poem (or another original poem you’ve written this month) on our Padlet for an invite to our Poetry Cafe on May 5th! We’ll have a special treat for the authors of our 5 favourite poems from the month! 😉

APril Maker Mondays

Maker Mondays this month are dedicated towards making for the ICC Fair (May 9, 10, 11th). We’ll have workshops on Tinkercad and 3D printing the first two Mondays and next, come learn how to use the Cricut Cutter! We hope to have a table where we can sell things that were made in the LC this month at the fair!

 

Earth Day Photo and Haiku CHallenge

*Reminder: All photos must be taken BY YOU and since this contest started.
Enjoy some time in nature, take a photo and write a haiku about/inspired by your photo. All submissions due before Earth day (Apr 22nd).

Just because we’re not at school, does not mean that making has to stop! Join in for our March Making Challenge:

 Complete a full row and share photos of your creations on our Padlet to enter the draw for an indigo gift card at the end of the month! These can be completed at school or home. The only requirement is it has to be something you’ve made SINCE this challenge started! 😉

Going somewhere on Spring Break? Send a postcard to the MC Library from wherever you travel! You can send your postcard from nearby or far away!  Anyone who sends in a postcard will enter the draw for this candy jar after the break. Come get info in the Learning Commons!

 

French Language week

March 20th is International Francophonie Day! We’re partnering up with amazing Mme. Yoyotte to celebrate French this month!

After March break, we’ll have an interactive bulletin board of French Idioms and a challenge to guess what each one means. We’ll also have a French game day at lunch! Stay tuned for more details after the break.

February MAKer Challenges:

 

DIY Kindness Colouring Page:

We’re looking for a colouring book page design that promotes a message about kindness or inspires kindness. This could include artwork, a quote, or combo of both. Just make sure that artwork is original and don’t colour it in yet!

We will be selecting a winning design, and this will be coloured in by middle campus students on Pink Shirt Day this year.

 

Kindness Stickers:

We’re also looking for original sticker designs that promote and inspire kindness. We’ll use the Cricut cutter to cut out winning sticker designs to hand out on pink shirt day! 

Designs are due Feb 15th!

You can come any lunch to work on either design challenge!

 

Book Trailers:

Is there a book you’ve always wanted made into a movie? Create a movie trailer for your favourite book—but only if it hasn’t been made into a movie yet!

Come to the info session on Tuesday, Feb 21st!

Winners will receive a prize a “Movie Basket,” with popcorn, candy and pop and be invited to watch Pixar shorts at break!

January MAKer Challenges: Try Something NEW!

Try a new Recipe:

We’ve got some awesome new cookbooks just into the library. All you need to do for this challenge is check one out, try out a new recipe and share a photo with us on the Padlet. Submit a photo any time before Jan 30th 

Try a new Craft:

Come learn the ancient art of paper folding! We’ll have 3 tables, and a student leader at each to walk you through the steps to create a new design each day!  

Try a new Challenge: Tinkersketch

TinkerSketch is a challenge to respond to a daily drawing prompt. The goal is to make time (even if it’s just a tiny bit) to celebrate your creative self and jump start creativity through sketching. It’s up to you how you interpret the prompt, the only requirement is to sketch something! We’ll have a table set up for the month of January, and you can come any day to respond to the prompt!

 

Participate in one of these activities, and share a photo on the padlet to enter the draw for an indigo gift card!

 

Think outside the box engineering challenge:


Receive a box of random supplies and build the “challenge object” only using the supplies in your box! There will be 3 challenges: build a boat, a structure that holds a book open and a vehicle with wheels! Sign up individually or with a team of up to 3 people!

In December, as our focus is on making and giving, not just getting and consuming, we are putting together gift baskets for refugee families. We have connected with two refugee families, each who have two kids and would appreciate help getting a gift for their kids over the holidays. There’s two ways you could contribute if you wanted:

We are hoping to put up a new window display and we need your help to do this by creating a book spine for our window shelf! Come by the LC any day next week to pick up a book spine template. You can colour one by hand or make one digitally!

LEGO Book Scenes

This is a challenge to recreate a scene from a book using Lego.  You can work on it any day next week and all you need to do is upload a picture of your final scene to the Padlet (QR code in the learning commons) when you’re done to enter the challenge!

BOOK CHARACTER Pumpkins

Come paint a book character pumpkin on Oct 18th and 20th at lunch or create one at home to submit by Oct 20th!

You can work on own or with a partner. You will need to sign up for this ahead ahead of time as we have limited space. We will supply some paint and small pumpkins, but if you would like a medium or large pumpkin you will have to provide your own!
