Our new arrival

It’s a boy!! Oliver Henry Block arrived yesterday at 1:17am weighing 8lb 9oz and measuring 20.5 inches. Mr. Andrew and I are enjoying the first few days as new parents and marvelling at this amazing gift from God. I’m hoping to bring Oliver to school to meet the students and staff in June. You might see us on Sports Day and on the last day of school!

For now, I hope that it’s been a smooth transition for your child. I wanted to let you know that Mrs. Ansley has set up a new blog for 2Y. Please take some time to click on the link below and subscribe to her blog so you can stay up to date on events and activities. Term 3 Home Reading Goal

2Y students did a great job of home reading in Terms 1 and 2. Before Spring Break, most students were able to meet the personal reading goal they set and were able to participate in the reading celebration we had with the other Grade 2 classes. The children enjoyed sharing books with their friends from 2H and 2Ch and playing games in the gym.

For Term 3, your child has set a new home reading goal. If your child reads the minimum of 15 minutes a day for the next three months, they will be able to achieve the class goal of 1100 minutes. Some children have decided to challenge themselves and set a higher goal. Each student’s goal is written on the back of their agenda. Students know that they MUST record their home reading on the yellow log sheets in their agenda.

Here’s how you can help your child develop a daily habit of reading and recording:

  • Set a regular time for reading
  • Provide a timer
  • Add up the minutes each week to monitor progress

Midway through the term, you will be asked to help add up the minutes to see if your child is on track to meet or exceed their goal. Thank you for your assistance to develop routine and discipline in your child’s daily reading.

iCare for the World Week

This week is iCare for the World week at RCS. Throughout the week, the students will be participating in a variety of activities and experiences to build awareness of the needs of the world and how they can help bring God’s kingdom to earth. RCS partners with International China Concern (ICC), an organization that bring love, hope, and opportunity to China’s abandoned and disabled children.

Your child brought home a package of fundraising materials on Friday. Please read through it carefully. Donors can either give your child cash or a cheque. The envelope and “OFFLINE PLEDGE FORM” must be returned to school, even if no money was collected. Forms and envelopes are due on Friday, April 20, 2018.

To make an online donation, your child will need to set up a personal fundraising page, with parent assistance. Follow the directions outlined on the fundraising envelope. When prompted for a team name, enter 2Y.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Mental Math Strategies

In Math we are learning different mental math strategies for adding and subtracting 1- and 2-digit numbers. To help your child become more confident and comfortable with using these strategies, you can help them at home. Your child should be able to quickly recall number doubles up to twenty (for instance, double 2 is 4, double 6 is 12, double 8 is 16, etc.) As well, your child should also be able to quickly recognize numbers that make 10, such as 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, etc. We call these numbers “Ten Friends”. Please spend a few minutes each day calling out a number and having your child name its double or “ten friend”. If your child is having difficulty recalling these quickly, send me an email or speak to me and I can offer some other ways to help your child learn them. Thank you for your assistance at home.

Easter

Since Easter falls during Spring Break this year, we will be taking this week to explore the events that lead up to Jesus’ death and resurrection. We will be reflecting on Christ’s sacrifice for us and the hope we have in His resurrection.

Memory Verse

Just a reminder that there will be a memory verse quiz this Friday.

If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all.

Romans 8:31b-32a

Library News from Ms. Huber

The library will be closed after school on Friday, March 16th. Please plan for pick up at 2:45.

If you are travelling over spring break and see a library, please take a picture of your children in front of the library. It would be fun to see pictures of libraries around the world. You can then email Ms. Huber the photo and location. She will create a display outside the library in April. If you are not travelling, but use our local public libraries, please take photos of your children’s visits. We would love to include those too! Due to privacy reasons, please make sure only your children are in the photos.
