Clubs begin this week. Please remind your son or daughter if they are participating in a club this term. The club list is posted outside the computer room for you to refer to.

Scholastic Book Order

The January Scholastic book order will be sent home today. If you would like to order any books, please return the forms and payment to school by Friday, January 20, 2017.

Memory Verse

Don’t forget that Matthew 4:4 will be quizzed on this Friday.

2Y Chapel

Planning and preparing for Chapel is underway in our class. We will be acting out the story of Joseph and we may need props and costumes. Stay tuned for how you can help our class in this way. This week, some of the students will bring home scripts to practice. Please help your child review the parts they will be reading, reminding them of the features of oral language that we learned during our storytelling unit: volume, pace, expression, body language, and eye contact.

Pajama Day Tomorrow

This Friday is Pajama Day! Your child is invited to wear their pjs to school and bring a small stuffy. During Family Groups this Friday morning, the students will be reading with a buddy. They are welcome to bring a favourite book from home, labelled with their first and last name, or use a classroom book if they forget. There will be no chapel in the gym this Friday.

Week of January 8, 2018

Happy new year and welcome to 2018! I trust that you have had a restful and enjoyable Christmas holiday. As much as I love holidays, it also feels good to be back into the routines and rhythms of school. Here’s what’s happening this week:

Memory Verse

To begin the new year, our Bible unit will be about the ministry of Jesus and the memory verse will be about the importance of God’s word in our lives. The students will have two weeks to memorize this passage and it will be quizzed on Friday, January 19, 2018.

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:4

Volunteering to listen to students read

I have put up the calendar for this term outside our classroom door. Please sign up to listen to students read. You are free to sign up for as many days as you would like. Thank you for supporting our class in this way!

Home Reading

Reading continues to be an important part of Grade 2 and your child has made very good progress in learning reading skills and strategies. In order to develop their reading, the students need ample time to read, in class and at home. Your child has set a personal home reading goal for this term. If your child reads 15 minutes each day from now until Spring Break, they will be able to complete 900 minutes of home reading. Each child’s goal is at least 900 minutes. Some students have challenged themselves to read more than 900 minutes this term. The number of minutes that your child is aiming to read is on the back of their agenda.

Please continue to help your child participate in home reading by spending at least 15 minutes each night with books and record the amount of time your child has read in the yellow reading log. As a class, we would like to see everyone achieve their personal goal and there will be a reading celebration at the end of the term to recognize and celebrate this achievement.

Family Group

This Friday (January 12), will be a dress up day and Family Group activity. It will be pajama day! You child is allowed to wear their pajamas and bring a stuffed animal or blanket. Your child should also bring a favourite book to share with their family group.

For your calendar

2Y will be presenting Chapel on Friday, January 26, 2018. For Chapel this year, the Grade 2 classes have taken on the theme of the Fruit of the Spirit and 2Y will focus on love, joy and peace. We will begin to plan and prepare this week. Please keep us in your prayers as we gather our thoughts and ideas and explore creative ways to present to the school what God is teaching us.

Exciting Personal News

This morning, I shared some exciting personal news with 2Y. 2018 is looking to be a year of change and transition for my family because my husband and I are expecting a baby this spring. I am due in early May. The details of my maternity leave have yet to be arranged, but I would like to work for as long as possible. I’m very much enjoying this class of students and I’m sad that I don’t get to finish the school year with them. I will let you know as details and arrangements are made.

Merry Christmas

Thank you all so very much for your thoughtful and generous Christmas gifts. Your kindness is overwhelming. The Amazon gift cards will be put to good use and my husband and I will enjoy using the Cactus Club gift card this holiday. I especially love the digital Christmas card. Thank you for your words of encouragement. You are too kind!

It has been a wonderful term. I have truly enjoyed getting to know your family and working with your child. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season with your family and loved ones. Safe travels to those of you who will be visiting far away places.

Thank you again for all your support and prayers this school year. Looking forward to seeing all of you in 2018. Have a blessed Christmas and happy new year!

Week of December 11, 2017

We have another busy week ahead of us, with several exciting events coming up. I’m sure it is also a busy time at your home, as well. Please make every effort to ensure that your child is getting adequate sleep each night. This is especially important at this time of year when there are many exciting things happening at school. Being rested will help your child to manage their excitement and continue to learn and get along with classmates.

Thank you!

Thank you all for your generous contributions for the Gifts for the Manger project. Our class collected a heaping box of baby items. May God use our gifts to bless babies and young families in our communities and may they know of God’s love through us!

Grade 7 Buddy Activity

On Tuesday, we will be going to the middle campus to participate in an activity with our Grade 7 buddies. We will be bringing our lunch with us to eat with them. We will NOT be at school to receive Nova foods, so please make arrangement for your child to have a lunch at school by recess.

Music Sharing

Just a reminder that 2Y will be having their Music Sharing class during Music on Wednesday, December 13 from 9:45 am-10:15 am. Remind your child to bring their music and/or instrument on Wednesday morning. Parents are invited to attend!

Christmas

Christmas Caroling

Just a reminder that 2Y will be going Christmas carolling tomorrow afternoon. Mrs. Chong has asked for the children to wear smart casual or semi-formal clothing for this event. Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately.

Home Reading

Thank you for encouraging your child to develop a habit of reading and recording each night. Next week, I will be recording the number of minutes that your child has read and written in their home reading log. Over the weekend, would you please help your child add up all the minutes read this term (up to this week) and let me know by Thursday. This could be a great math exercise to help your child count by 10s and 5s.

I know several children were very diligent in reading daily, but did not record their minutes read. If your child was not consistent in recording minutes, just add whatever time they have written. Your child will not be penalized for the number of minutes. We will be using this number, however big or small, to set reading goals for Term 2 in January. Thank you for your help.

Spelling words

I am not giving out a usual word sort this week. In Math, the students are learning different ways to represent numbers, including number words to 100. So our spelling words will be number words this week. Your child will bring home a list of number words that they should practice. Each child will bring home a list that is appropriate for their spelling development. Please email me or speak to me if you have any questions.

Gifts for the Manger

For the last 17 years, RCS Elementary Campus has been collecting items for the Crisis Pregnancy Centre. This local organization helps support mothers experiencing an unplanned or crisis pregnancy.

Our classroom will have a decorated box to collect new items that a baby could benefit from. (Gently used items can also be donated.) Suggested items are sleepers and outfits (newborn to 12 months), undershirts, bibs, blankets, towels, washcloths, and bottles. Socks, slippers, hats, shampoo, lotions, diapers, wipes, and toys are also appreciated. Food items such as powdered formula, baby cereal and jarred baby food is perfect. Moms can receive treats too: toiletries, magazines and treats.

Collecting starts on Monday, November 27th and ends on Thursday, December 7th.

Please encourage your child to participate by taking your child to the store and allowing them to select something to donate. We want to teach our children to share their blessings with those around them and this is an excellent opportunity to practice this.
