Where you can find out what's happening in Grade 2

The Week of January 22nd

Library Bag

We will have Library on Monday. Please make sure your child brings their library bag.

Spelling

Spelling will continue as usual with the students receiving their words on Monday and writing their test on Friday.

Bible Verse

The students will have two weeks to memorize a new passage and it will be quizzed on Friday, February 2nd. The students will come up with actions for the verse later in the week. Ask them to show you.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor. Hate your enemy.’ But here is what I tell you. Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you. Then you will be children of your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:43-45a (NIRV)

Water Homework

Yesterday I sent home a brainstorm sheet about how your family uses water. Please help you child add to their ideas and return the sheet by next Friday, January 26th. On Monday I will send home a homework sheet for your child to do about ways your family uses water at home. It is called “Let’s Conserve Water: Home Challenge”. This will be used in our upcoming Science lessons. Please help your child complete the sheet and send it to school by Friday, January 26th at the latest.

Scholastic

I sent home the Scholastic flyers today. If you would like to place an order, please hand in the order form and payment by Friday, January 26th.

For your calendar

2H will be presenting Chapel on Friday, February 2, 2018. For Chapel this year, the Grade 2 classes have taken on the theme of the Fruit of the Spirit and 2H will focus on patience, kindness and goodness. Please keep us in your prayers as we gather our thoughts and ideas and explore creative ways to present to the school what God is teaching us. Please help your child practice their parts at home. Remind them to practice with the skills they learned in our storytelling unit: expression, pace, volume, and eye contact. Also please send the script to school everyday so we can use it to practice in class.

If your child is a character in the bible story, I will have costumes for them at school. I would prefer if they wear darker colours if possible underneath but whatever you send them in will be fine.

If your child is a narrator or an actor in the scenarios, they can wear whatever clothes you would like, preferable something that matches their part.

Upcoming Dates:

Feb 2- 2H Chapel

Feb 2- Canuck colours and Jersey day

Volunteering to listen to students read

I have put up the calendar for this term outside our classroom door. Please sign up to listen to students read. You are free to sign up for as many days as you would like. Thank you for supporting our class in this way!

Home Reading

Reading continues to be an important part of Grade 2 and your child has made very good progress in learning reading skills and strategies. In order to develop their reading, the students need ample time to read, in class and at home. Your child has set a personal home reading goal for this term. If your child reads 15 minutes each day from now until Spring Break, they will be able to complete 900 minutes of home reading. Each child’s goal is at least 900 minutes. Some students have challenged themselves to read more than 900 minutes this term. The number of minutes that your child is aiming to read is on the front page of their agenda.

Please continue to help your child participate in home reading by spending at least 15 minutes each night with books and record the amount of time your child has read in the pink reading log. As a class, we would like to see everyone achieve their personal goal and there will be a reading celebration at the end of the term to recognize and celebrate this achievement.

When your child brings home the script, please help them practice their parts at home. Some Reminders

Please make every effort to ensure that your child is getting adequate sleep each night. This is especially important at this time of year when there are many exciting things happening at school. Being rested will help your child to manage their excitement and continue to learn and get along with classmates.

Grade 7 Buddy Activity

Tomorrow we will be going to the middle campus to participate in an activity with our Grade 7 buddies. We will be bringing our lunch with us to eat with them. We will NOT be at school to receive Nova foods, so please make arrangement for your child to have a lunch at school by recess.

Music Sharing

Just a reminder that 2H will be having their Music Sharing class during Music on Wednesday, December 13 from 10:15-10:45 am. Remind your child to bring their music and/or instrument on Wednesday morning. Parents are invited to attend!

Friday

Friday is a school-wide dress up day. Wear any festive clothing, red and green, or any other Christmas clothes you have!

2H will not be having a formal Christmas party. However, on Friday, the students will participate in special Christmas centres, including crafts and games. In the afternoon, we will join with our 2CH and 2Y friends to enjoy a Christmas movie. The teachers will provide popcorn for the movies, so please do not send food to share. Thank you.

Carolling

We will be going carolling on Thursday. Please send your child to school wearing smart casual or semi-formal clothing. They will not have switches that day.

Christmas

This is the last week of school for 2017! The students have made Christmas cards for their Grade 7 buddies and they will be finishing up their Twelve Days of Christmas books. They will continue to work on representing numbers to 100 and beyond in various ways using various materials. In Math, the students are also learning about ordinal numbers (numbers that define a position in a sequence, for example, first second, third, etc.) In Bible, the students will finish learning about the events leading to Christ’s birth.

The Week of December 11th

Thank you for all the gifts your brought for Gifts for the Manger. Our class filled two big boxes. It was great to see the generosity.

Library Bag

We will have Library on Monday. Please make sure your child brings their library bag.

Homework

There will be no spelling or Bible verse this week.

Home Reading Minutes

Thank you for encouraging your child to develop a habit of reading and recording each night. Next week, I will be recording the number of minutes that your child has read and written in their home reading log. Over the weekend, would you please help your child add up all the minutes read this term (up to this week) and let me know by Thursday. This could be a great math exercise to help your child count by 10s and 5s.

I know several children were very diligent in reading daily, but did not record their minutes read. If your child was not consistent in recording minutes, just add whatever time they have written. Your child will not be penalized for the number of minutes. We will be using this number, however big or small, to set reading goals for Term 2 in January. Thank you for your help.

Buddies Field Trip

On Tuesday we are going to the Middle school to visit with our buddies. We will be going after recess and coming back after lunch. We will be eating our lunch with our buddies. Please make sure you child has a bagged lunch in their backpack on that day. We will not be here to receive NOVA foods that day.

Upcoming Dates:

December 12th- Field Trip to visit Buddies

December 14th- Caroling

December 15th- Last day of school before Christmas break
