The News from 2H

Where you can find out what's happening in Grade 2

The Week of October 1st

Morning Drop off

Starting Monday (October 1st), I am now asking that you say goodbye to your child at the door and do not enter the classroom. I am encouraging the students to become more independent and this will help with that. You may enter through the classroom door to go to another classroom, but please do not stay in our classroom with your child. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. You are always welcome to schedule an appointment with me.

Chapel

2H will be presenting Chapel on Friday, October 19th, 2018. For Chapel this year, we will focus on using incredible words. We have begun planning and preparing this week. Please keep us in your prayers as we gather our thoughts and ideas and explore creative ways to present to the school what God is teaching us. Your child should have brought home the script, so please help them practice their parts at home. Remind them to practice their parts with good volume and eye contact.

Library

Library is on Monday. Please make sure your child brings their library bag.

Bible Memory Verse

The students will be reciting their verse this week. They have made up actions to accompany the verse. Get your child to show them to you.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 NLT

The verse will be recited this Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

No School Thurs/ Fri/ Mon

There is no school Thursday or Friday due to a Pro-D Day. Also, no school on Monday (Oct 8th) due to Thanksgiving.

Home Reading

The students should have started reading at home. Please make sure that your child is doing at least 15 minutes of reading each day. Also please help your child record the book title and amount of time into their Home Reading Log.

Spelling

Your child will receive their new words on Monday. Please help your child practice their words at home. Since we have two short weeks, the students will have two weeks to learn their words. They will be tested on the words on Friday, October 12th.

Parent Volunteers

For parents who were interested in listening to 2H students read out loud, I have put up a calendar outside our classroom for parents to sign up. There was a large intrest in reading with the students so I figured a calendar would work best. The calendars that are up are for now until the end of December. If you can spare 20-25 minutes in the morning (8:20-8:45am) to listen to children, read, please sign your name under the dates you’re available. You can sign up for as many or as few dates as you’d like. Hopefully, there will be someone to listen to reading everyday. I could have two people per day if you like a day that already has one person. You will need to have a completed criminal records check before you can volunteer with the students. If you completed it last year then it is still current and you do not need to do it again this year.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

Storytelling Homework Due Oct 9

Dear Parents,

In the coming weeks the Grade 2 students will be doing an unit on oral storytelling. We will begin by talking about what our names mean. We will use this information to practice our oral storytelling skills. The students have been asked to find out what their names mean. Please help your child by discussing and answering these questions on the blue sheet that came home today:

Who named you?

What does your name mean?

Why did you get this name?

Is there a special story about your name?

How many names do you have? What are they?

Do you have a name in a different language? What it is?

What is your family’s cultural background?

Do you have any nicknames? How did you get them?

This would be a great time to tell your child the story behind their names (i.e. family name, biblical references, cultural origins, etc.) and how you picked their names for them.
You child will be presenting their findings to the class starting Oct. 9th.
Please help your child complete the information sheet they brought home, practice sharing about their name, and then return the blue sheet to school by Tuesday, October 9th, 2018.
This will be the first step in a series of activities that involve interviewing family members and collecting stories. More details will be coming, so stay tuned to the blog.
Thank you for your help with your child’s learning.

The Week of September 24th

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 NLT

The verse will be recited on October 3, 2018.

Emergency Drills

In class we have been practicing the drills for if an emergency happens at school. We have already had a school-wide fire drill and soon we will have an earthquake and lockdown drill. These drills are simply to prepare the students so they know what to do in an emergency. Last week we practiced a lockdown drill and an earthquake drill. We practiced what to do and then prayed about it. If your child is worried about these types of things, perhaps you could discuss it with them and pray with them about it.

Parent Volunteers

For parents who were interested in listening to 2H students read out loud, I have put up a calendar outside our classroom for parents to sign up. There was a large intrest in reading with the students so I figured a calendar would work best. The calendars that are up are for now until the end of December. Superhero Day

Just a reminder that tomorrow is Superhero Day and your child is invited to dress up as their favourite hero, real or fictional. This is an optional event, so if your child would rather not wear a costume, that would be okay, but encourage your child to participate in school spirit. Please make sure that they can run in their costume as tomorrow is also the Terry Fox Run. The run will happen after our Chapel in the afternoon.

Chapel will be from 1:30pm-2:30pm. The chapel will have songs, a terry fox video, some games and an outside run that will be weather dependent.  In addition, students may bring a loonie or a toonie donation that will be collected and sent to the Terry Fox Fund.

I am looking forward to seeing some “super” costumes!

The Week of September 10th

Welcome to our first full week of the 2018-2019 school year. We are working hard at learning the new routines of Grade 2. Here are important notes and dates for this upcoming week.

Birthdays

Since we have quite a few birthdays coming up in the next couple months, I thought I would share with you the class procedures. This year, the Grade Two teachers are asking that parents do not send treats or gifts for their classmates when it is your child’s birthday. Instead, to celebrate birthdays we are inviting the children to bring in a book for our classroom library. Take your child to a bookstore and have him/her select a book to give to our class. On his/her birthday, your child can bring in the book and tell us why they chose it. I will put a special “birthday book” sticker in the book and your child’s classmates can enjoy the book. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support in encouraging your child’s love of reading!

Meet the teacher evening

This Tuesday, September 11 will be Meet the Teacher evening. It will begin at 7:00pm in the large gym. This event is for parents only, so please arrange childcare for your children. I look forward to seeing you there!

Photo day

Individual student photos will be taken on Wednesday, September 12. We will hopefully have our photos taken in the morning. Your child should wear to school the clothes you want them in for the picture. Since, our class has P.E. in the afternoon and the students will be required to wear an athletic style shirt and pants/shorts, please send along those clothes and they can change into them after pictures if you have special photo clothes. Remember to bring a smile!

Parent questionnaire

I sent a parent questionnaire this week to all families via email. If you did not receive it, you can find the link to the pdf here. Grade 2 parent questionnaire

Please complete the questionnaire, print it out, and return it to school by Wednesday, September 12. Your responses to the questions will help me to get to know your child better and assist me as I support your child at school. Thank you very much!

Nova Foods- October 19th

I sent home a Nova foods order form today. You will notice that October 19th says district-wide pro-D day. There IS school that day, just no NOVA Foods. It is our Chapel day. Please pack a lunch for your child that day if you plan to order Nova Foods each day.

Upcoming Events:

Sept. 11th- Meet the Teacher 7pm

Sept. 12th– Photo Day

Sept. 21st- “Super Hero” dress-up day. The students are invited to dress like a Super Hero.  It can be a dr., nurse, teacher, parent, Jesus, Moses, etc.  It can also be a Super Hero like Batman, Superman, Incredibles, etc.
