Where you can find out what's happening in Grade 2

The Week December 3rd

This week will be really busy. Please make sure your child has all necessary things for each day.

Monday

Library

Library will be on Monday. Please make sure your child brings their library bag.

Christmas Concert Matinee

On Monday, Mrs. Chong has asked that your child wear nice clothes to school as they will be singing in the afternoon. The Matinee concert starts at 1:30pm.

Tuesday

Library Closed After School

The library will be closed after school. Please pickup your child(ren) immediately after school at 2:45pm.

Christmas Concert

Tuesday will be the school’s Christmas Concert at the Chan Centre. Please bring your child at 5:30pm. The show will start at 6:15pm. That evening, please have your child wear:

– formal white top (eg. boys: white collared button shirt or polo shirt,  girls: white blouse or polo shirt)

– black bottoms (eg. boys: black pants,  girls: black pants, black skirt with leggings or tights)

– dark coloured shoes  (eg. dress shoes, casual shoes, etc – NO bright colours, please)

Wednesday

Skating

The Grade 2 classes will be going skating on Wednesday, December 5. We will be leaving the school around 10:15am and returning around 12:15pm. Parents are asked NOT to attend. The Grade 7s will be practicing their leadership skills and will help the Grade 2s. If your child has their own skates, please send them to school with your child. We will bring them with us on the bus.

Please help your child prepare the following:

1. Warm clothes, jacket, and mittens

2. Thick, long socks AND an extra pair of socks

Thursday

Carolling

We will be going carolling at Minoru Residence on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018 from 9:30-11:45am. Unfortunately, there will NOT be extra space at the residence for parents.  Thank you for your understanding.

Bible Verse

The students will get their new verse on Monday. The will have two weeks to learn it.

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:11

They will recite on Friday, December 14th. 

Spelling

Because the week is so busy we will not be doing spelling this week.

Gifts for the Manger

For the last 18 years, RCS Elementary Campus has been collecting items for the Crisis Pregnancy Centre. This local organization helps support mothers experiencing an unplanned or crisis pregnancy.

Our classroom will have a decorated box to collect new items that a baby could benefit from. (Gently used items can also be donated.) Suggested items are sleepers and outfits (newborn to 12 months), undershirts, bibs, blankets, towels, washcloths, and bottles. Socks, slippers, hats, shampoo, lotions, diapers, wipes, and toys are also appreciated. Food items such as powdered formula, baby cereal and jarred baby food is perfect. Moms can receive treats too: toiletries, magazines and treats. Collecting ends on Friday, December 14th.

The Week of November 26th

Scholastic

But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding. Jeremiah 10:12

The verse will be recited on November 30th, 2018.

Spelling

The students will continue to learn their words from last week. We will be learning different ways to represent numbers in Math and one of the ways is number words. Please help you child learn to spell these words. The spelling test will be on November 30th. 

Christmas Cookie Decorating

The students will be decorating gingerbread cookies in Family Groups on Friday, November 30th. Please have your child bring a small bag of nut-free candy for decorating (approx. ½ cup) before Friday. I can keep them in the classroom.

For example:
* Smarties                                  * Raisins/Craisins                 * Gummy bears                    * Mini-marshmallows
* Chocolate chips                     * Dried fruit                            * Seeds                                    * And many more!
* Jelly beans                              * Pretzels/cereal                    * Liquorice

Christmas Concert Practice Field Trip

Grade 2 students will be going to the RCS Middle School on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018, from 11am-12:30pm. The purpose of this field trip is to hold a joint Christmas choir rehearsal with the Middle School Choirs (Gr. 6, 7, 8) and Elementary School Choirs (Gr. 2, 3) for the song “Gloria” in preparation for the Christmas Concert.  This joint choir will be directed by Mr. Roger Grose! Parent volunteers are NOT needed for this field trip.

If you have not yet approved your child’s participation in this trip please do so by Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018.

Reminders

No School Tomorrow

The 8th Annual Cookie Decorating Extravaganza

Who: Elementary school students (K to 5)
What: Decorating gingerbread cookies
Where: In Family Groups
When: Friday, November 30th in the morning
Why: To celebrate Christmas and community

What to bring: a small bag of nut-free candy for decorating (approx. ½ cup).

The Week of November 12th

The students did a fantastic job sharing the stories they collected. I am so proud of them. Thank you for helping your child with this project.

NO School on Monday

Monday is a holiday in lieu of Remembrance Day. There is no school.

Skating Tomorrow

Hello Parents,

Just a reminder that we will be ice skating tomorrow. Please help your child prepare the following:

1. Warm clothes, jacket, and mittens

2. Thick, long socks AND an extra pair of socks

3.  Snack – If you come skating with us, please do not purchase snacks for your child at the skating rink. We will have snack at school before we leave and we will be having lunch as soon as we return to RCS. Thank you for your cooperation.

We are leaving the school at 10:15 tomorrow morning and we will arrive at Minoru Ice Rink at 10:30am. We’d love to see you! Parents who are coming can help students put on and take off ice skates.  If you are interested, you may skate as well but you will have to bring your own skates or rent from the rink.

The Week of November 5

Thank you for all the books you gave to the classroom. The students were so excited to see the new books.

Storytelling Homework Due

Please help your child complete the storyboards. The stories can be from parents, grandparents, relatives, or family friends. The storyboard should be filled with pictures and short phrases that help with memory. When the sheet is completed, students are expected to colour their storyboards with pencil crayons.

Please help your child practice retelling one of the stories as they will be sharing this with the class this week. Encourage your child to speak clearly and loudly, use expression to convey feelings and maintain eye contact with the listener.

The completed storyboards are due: Monday, November 5th.  We will presenting our collected stories starting November 6.

Skating field trip

The Grade 2 classes will be going skating on Friday, November 9.

We will be leaving the school around 10:15am and returning around 12:15pm. All parents who have volunteered to come along to help with supervision are welcome to attend with us. Because all three classes are going on this field trip, there is no room on the bus for parents. Volunteers will have to drive on their own, but there should be opportunities for carpooling. Please talk among yourselves to arrange rides.
