Hatchery Field Trip

We are going to the Little Campbell Hatchery on Monday to release salmon fry. Be sure to pack a snack and water for your child. If possible, pack your child’s snack in a small backpack, as your child will be carrying his/her bag during the trip. The students will return to school for lunch. Since much of this field trip will be outdoors, your child will need to dress for spring weather. A good idea would be to dress in layers and if the weather is warm, your child can remove long sleeves and jackets. Be sure your child has boots on as it may be muddy.

If you are volunteering with our class, please arrive just before 9:30am. Also, please let me know if you are planning on attending so I know how many parents to expect. The address is:

Financial Literacy

The students spent the week learning about tithing, spending, and saving. The students received one dollar per day. Many students decided to save up their money to spend on the big activity today (Gymnastics with me, Rock climbing with Mrs. Bjornson, or an Art Class with Ms. Chan). They had a great time.

Some of the students chose to tithe their money. If they did, I gave them a real loonie for every dollar they tithed to take to their own church to give as a tithe or to put in the envelope to give to ICC. I sent the loonie(s) home today in a small white envelope. If your child brought one home, please help them to remember to give it to their church this week or place in the ICC envelope. It was great to see some of the students putting God first.

ICC Envelopes

We have been discussing the term “sacrifice” and what it means for the students. We have discussed ways they could sacrifice for ICC, be it their time, money or things. The students had some insightful discussions. We also have been praying for one of the girls from ICC, Yan Li.

The envelope and “OFFLINE PLEDGE FORM” must be returned to school, even if no money was collected. Forms and envelopes are due on Monday, April 15, 2019.

Library Closed Thursday

To help students and staff prepare for the evening musical, the library and computer lab will be closed after school on Thursday, April 18th. Please arrange to pick up your child at 2:45.

TERM 3 HOME READING GOAL

2H students did a great job of home reading in Terms 1 and 2. Before Spring Break, most students were able to meet the personal reading goal they set.

For Term 3, your child has set a new home reading goal. If your child reads the minimum of 15 minutes a day for the next three months, they will be able to achieve the class goal of 1100 minutes. Some children have decided to challenge themselves and set a higher goal. Each student’s goal is written on the front of their agenda. Students know that they MUST record their home reading on the blue log sheets in their agenda.

Here’s how you can help your child develop a daily habit of reading and recording:

– Set a regular time for reading
– Provide a timer
– Add up the minutes each week to monitor progress
Midway through the term, I will ask you to help add up the minutes to see if your child is on track to meet or exceed their goal. Thank you for your assistance to develop routine and discipline in your child’s daily reading.

ICC Week

This week is iCare for the World week at RCS. Throughout the week, the students will be participating in a variety of activities and experiences to build awareness of the needs of the world and how they can help bring God’s kingdom to earth. RCS partners with International China Concern (ICC), an organization that bring love, hope, and opportunity to China’s abandoned and disabled children.

Your child brought home a package of fundraising materials today. Please read through it carefully. Donors can either give your child cash or a cheque. The envelope and “OFFLINE PLEDGE FORM” must be returned to school, even if no money was collected. Forms and envelopes are due on Monday, April 15, 2019.

To make an online donation, your child will need to set up a personal fundraising page, with parent assistance. Follow the directions outlined on the fundraising envelope. When prompted for a team name, enter 2 H.

If you have any questions, please contact me. We are looking forward to this exciting week!

In-class Field Trip

We have finished learning about animals in science. On Monday we will be visited by a group called Urban Safari. They had rescheduled due to the snow days in February. They will be teaching us about different exotic animals. Ask your child about the program and what they learned.

The students will be going to the middle school on Friday to visit our buddies. We will be leaving after recess and returning to school for lunch. Please approve your child’s permission slip on MSM if you have not yet done so.

Homework Routines

Please continue to help your child with their spelling/reading/Bible Memory Verse (BMV) everyday.

Spelling- Your child will receive their new spelling words on Monday.  Please help your child cut out and practice these words. Their spelling test will be on Friday, April 12, 2019

Math Activity

Dear Parents,

Next week during Math, we will be exploring Financial Literacy through play.

Every day for the week, the students in 2H will be given $1. Students will also be given a bank account (a small-folder) with three pockets marked: tithe, save and spend. For the week, they will be expected to plan, save and spend their money by Friday.

Here is what they can spend their money on:

$1 – 5 mins. of extra recess time (up to 15 minutes extra)

They can use their money to spend on extra time everyday.

$3 – An art activity with Ms. Chan, Gymnastic lesson with Ms. Hesmert OR Rock climbing wall with Mrs. Bjornson (30mins)

This activity is only available on Friday and will be happening during class time.

$0-$5 – Tithe

Students can tithe up to $5.  The teacher will match their tithe with real money so they can offer their tithe to their church on Sunday or contribute to ICC. They will be given the money on Friday, April 12th.

Please begin discussing the importance and value of tithing, saving and spending with your child tonight. You may also want to share how your family manages money on a daily, monthly or yearly basis. What are your short-term and long-term goals? How does your family see money and its place for building God’s kingdom? I am positive your child will have many ideas to contribute. We also encourage you to discuss what your child plans to do with their money next week.

Thank you!

Miss Hesmert
