The 2024 WeRead Community Challenge!

We’re very excited to be launching the 2024 WeRead Community Challenge! This is an opportunity to read books in community and to challenge yourself and set  reading goals for the year.

Pick up a challenge form from the LC to join: 

Read a book from one of the monthly themes and tell us about it HERE to receive a sticker and join for our end of month book party! We’ll have snacks, games and prize draws at the book parties. Collect all 8 stickers throughout the year to join in for our end of year event!

Want to challenge yourself further? Check out the WeRead Super Challenge! With this challenge board you can customize and set your own reading goal for the year. Set a goal of a total number of books, or number of books you’d like to read each month and keep track of your completed books here:

Lego bingo challenge

Calling all master builders! Complete at least 3 builds in a team of 2 or 3, and upload your builds on Padlet under your group. The winning team will receive a Lego Advent Calendar that you can come and build in the LC. Come to the LC during lunch to get making!

Book Character pumpkins

Tis the season for pumpkins! Come to the LC on Oct 15th and 16th to paint a pumpkin to look like a book character. We will vote on the pumpkins Oct 21st-24th, and the winner will receive a Fall Cozy Kit!

The Writer’s table

Welcome, all budding writers and novelists! Here in the LC we’ll be hosting The Writer’s Table, where you can have space to work on your latest short story, poetry, or novel. If you’re working on a short story, we’d love to enter your story in the Vancouver Writer’s Fest Youth Writing Contest. Come see us in the LC for more details!

Poetry MOnth Challenges

To celebrate poetry month, there are 5 poetry prompts in the LC all month – come write a poem in response to that prompt, and share your poem on the form/padlet for an invite to our Poetry Cafe on April 26th! We’ll have a special treat for the authors of our 5 favourite poems from the month! There are also 3 poetry workshops this month to write a poem in, and Poem in Your Pocket, where you can take poems and carry them in your pocket with new ones each week.

EARTH DAY PHOTO AND HAIKU CHALLENGE

We’ll print cards with the winning photo/poem to sell at the ICC fair!

*Reminder: All photos must be taken BY YOU and since this contest started.
Enjoy some time in nature, take a photo and write a haiku about/inspired by your photo. All submissions due before Earth day (Apr 22nd).

february maker challenges: Colouring pages + stickers + stop motion!

If you played around with Tinkersketch last month, this will be a challenge right up your alley – creating a colouring page or a sticker!

Feb 20-28: Stop motion!

Try your hand at creating a stop motion! Use lego, clay, or paper to recreate a book scene, or spin a wheel for a random scene. The winning team will get a movie basket filled with popcorn, candy, and pop, to be enjoyed when we have our movie viewing day, when we will watch all our stop motions. Come to the LC to sign up!

The new year is a great time to try something new. Check out 4 opportunities to try something new this month – as well as a chance to win a gift card!

try a new recipe:

Did you know we have some awesome cookbooks just in the library? All you need to do for this challenge is check one out, try out a new recipe and share a photo with us on the Padlet. Submit a photo any time before Jan 30th 

Try a new craft:

Come immerse yourself in the cozy world of fibre arts and make a mini macrame weaving! Sign up for a tutorial on January 16 or 23 (just one per person) – spots are limited.

try a new challenge: tinkersketch

TinkerSketch is a challenge to respond to a daily drawing prompt. The goal is to make time (even if it’s just a tiny bit) to celebrate your creative self and jump start creativity through sketching. It’s up to you how you interpret the prompt, the only requirement is to sketch something! We’ll have a table set up for the month of January, and you can come any day to respond to the prompt!

 

Try out new tech: Robotics

Come tinker and explore, or create and code while you learn more about robotics! No experience necessary. When you sign up we’ll ask you to indicate the level of experience you have. We’ll sort you into a group and assign you a robot to work with based on your comfort level and experience.

We’re doing some Christmas crafting over the next week to bless our neighbours at Food for Life! Food for Life offers a meal to anyone in the community who needs one, every Wednesday night. We’re hosting a little Christmas market just before their Christmas meal where guests can choose from items we’ve crafted in the Learning Commons this month. Join in for one or more of these crafts to share some Christmas joy with Food for Life guests!
